Guide my feet Thank you for your photos inspired by our Lent Theme: Guide My Feet. Noreen and I are enjoying getting them and making a choice each week as to which will go on the cover. Please keep sending them and look out for yours in a future week. We have so many now that not all of them will get on a cover, but we are working on a plan to create a gallery page in a future issue of Journey so that you can see all of the photos we have seen. As I go for a walk in the early morning around Bair Island I am often carrying burdens of the busy day ahead in my shoulders. I am occupied with the many things I have to do, but then invariably, as I make my way around the trail something will happen that will catch my attention. Just the other day a duck took off from the wetlands, it's wings slapping on the surface of the water as it started to climb. The sound got my attention and stopped me thinking about the items on my to do list and made me focus on the world around me. I can get stuck inside my head and need to be reminded to be fully present in my whole body, breathing deeply and noticing creation around me. As I do this I find my center again and the items on the to do list start to look differently. As I walk, I find God guiding me and helping me to see what needs to be done in the day ahead. It happens best when I am breathing deeply, walking with my head up, and noticing the beauty of the dawn. #GuideMyFeet I turned my ankle in the half light before dawn about a month ago and I am still being a bit cautious. I need to be aware of where my feet are to make sure I don't do any more damage, so I am always looking down at my feet. The rehab you do after an injury of this kind is called 'Proprioception.' Proprioception is the awareness of where your limbs are relative to the rest of your body. The process of proprioception training helps you to strengthen damaged muscles and also know where your feet are and where they are going without having to look at them. During Lent we are asking you to become aware of your feet and how they are being guided by God. This is like 'proprioception' for the soul. We are asking you and our whole community to acknowledge that we are being guided by God and to become more conscious of that guidance. This means looking at our feet a bit more carefully, in order to be more conscious of them, so that eventually we can lift our eyes up and be confident that the guidance is happening even when we aren't looking so closely. In order to help us focus on this we are inviting you to take photos inspired by the theme 'Guide My Feet', and post them to Facebook on our parish page, under the hashtag #guidemyfeet. Or you could simply send them to the parish office. We will use the best photos as the cover for our Lent announcement sheets. This morning as I went for my usual meditative walk on Bair Island I was looking down at my feet. My mind was full of things, anxieties, concerns, pastoral issues that are unresolved, bits of administration hanging over me. At some point, as I breathed in the air, heard the birds singing and entered more fully into the moment; I lifted my head and saw what was around me. I saw the sun rise over Redwood City, and I became confident that God was with me, guiding my feet. I didn't need to look down at them anymore. On the first Sunday of Lent the liturgy always takes us to that point just after Jesus has been baptized and moves out into the wilderness to experience temptation. It reminds us of a very important truth: Baptism isn't the end of our journey of faith, it is just the beginning. If you follow the story closely it might look like Jesus walks into a nightmare right after his baptism, but in fact the challenges of the wilderness help him to understand what it means to live into God's dream for him. Jesus takes time in the wilderness to work out what his baptism means and to discover who he is as a person who is called by God to make the world a better place. He explores his temptations, his inner turmoil, and discovers resources in his faith to live in a way that some have called crazy, others have called radical, but many are inspired by. Traditionally Lent has been a time in which individuals are prepared for Holy Baptism. Over many centuries Lent became a season for Christians to reflect on our faith and how it influences the way we live on a day-to-day basis. Parishes often spend Lent reflecting on their mission and purpose in the wider community. We enter Lent this year with three different but overlapping constituencies in mind: Candidates for Confirmation/Reception/Reaffirmation: We have young people exploring what it means to make a mature commitment to lifelong faith formation. We have individuals interested in being received into the Episcopal Church from another denomination. We have other members of the community exploring their own faith as Episcopalians. These candidates are intentionally following the path of the catechumenate during the customary season of Lent. The Whole Parish: We have reflected as a parish on our hopes for the future, and have discerned the outline of a new vision for our parish life over the next three to five years. This season of Lent is a wonderful time in which we can begin to live into that vision. Individuals: During Lent, each of us in parish life is invited to reflect on our own baptism; on how to follow Jesus into the 'wilderness'; and to explore what it means to follow him in our daily lives today as we live into the dream that God intends for the world. We are offering a variety of tools to help guide us in observing a holy Lent and preparing us for a blessed Eastertide. See details on the following page. This Lent, you are invited to reflect on our baptismal promises, and follow Jesus by living into the dream that God intends for the world. Love, Matthew+ Monica+ --------------------- Images during Lent On the cover of Journey this month we have a photo inspired by our theme: "Guide my feet". This photograph was taken by Noelle Huey and features her family, boyfriend and Eric Choate. Often in major church seasons Noreen, Matthew and the staff collaborate on an art project for the front of our announcement sheets and the cover of Journey. This time we wanted to do something different. We started looking for photographs that captured the spirit of 'guide my feet'. We looked at black and white photographs of people on a journey, walking in a forest, or making their way up a path. We liked many of these, but then had an idea. We wanted to see if we could turn this project over to you, and decided to start with this photo of Eric. You see, Eric is following God's guidance in a new step in his life and this picture, of him walking with the sun in the background evokes a sense of his journey. For the rest of the season of Lent we would love YOU to submit photographs that capture the theme "Guide my Feet". The photos should be of you on a hike, or walking on a beach, or making your way up a path. The best ones each week will feature on the cover of our Announcement sheet and we will create a gallery of all of them by the time Easter comes around. Guide My Feet We have chosen this traditional African-American spiritual to shape our reflections on the Gospel each Sunday. Sing along - you'll find yourself singing it throughout the week! Book Club We invite you to join fellow parishioners in reading an exciting book by our new Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry, Crazy Christians: A Call to Follow Jesus. We encourage you to gather into small groups to explore this energizing account of what it means to follow Christ and live into God's dream for the world. We hope to have groups on weekdays, evenings, and weekends so you can choose sessions that are most convenient for you. Beginning on February 17th, Transfiguration will host two Wednesday discussion groups: A brown bag lunch at noon-1:30 pm, and a simple soup supper at 6:00-7:30 pm. Both groups will be self-led by parishioners in the Parish Hall. If you are interested in gathering a discussion group at another time, please contact Matthew or Monica. Youth Confirmation Classes Youth will be gathering every few weeks during February-May to explore what it means to make a mature commitment to lifelong faith formation. Youth will be invited to participate in Diocesan General Confirmations on June 4th. The parish will celebrate with participants, mentors and leaders on Sunday, June 5th. Meditation Candles & Prayers Take home prayers Monica has prepared short meditations for you to reflect on at the dinner table during Lent. A bundle of six floating candles will accompany the meditations so that you can create your own Lenten centerpiece with a dish of water. Each week in Lent, float and light another candle while reflecting on what each of the Baptismal promises means to you. You may be surprised how your answers to one question develop throughout the week, and how your faith deepens as we prepare for the Mystery of Easter. While meditating on the promises and prayers, think about the Water of your shared baptism with Jesus; think about the Light that Jesus uses to guide your feet; think about how the Spirit empowers you for service to others; think about what God dreams for the world and how you can be a part of it by following Jesus. On Easter, light the sixth candle, and rejoice in our renewed life in Christ! Episcopal 101 (and 102, 103, 104...) Over the next several months Matthew will be offering special sessions for those interested in becoming Episcopalian, wondering about their faith, or just wanting to know more about our Church. We will gather at 6:30pm over a simple pot-luck supper (venue to be confirmed) and have a conversation about the subjects listed below. Matthew has chosen subjects based on questions you have been asking him over the last few weeks and months, that will also help to deepen peoples appreciation of our Episcopal approach to faith. Please email him at [email protected] if you wish to come along and join in. Febuary 25th at 6:30m - What is the Anglican Communion and what do they think about sexuality? March 17th at 6:30pm - Why do we pray this way? May 19th at 6:30pm - What did you do in Israel? News & Announcements - also see www.transfig-sm.org Director of Music We say a final farewell to our Director of Music, Eric Choate today, February 7th. We have a card for Eric that you may sign today if you did not get a chance last Sunday. If you would like to give Eric a monetary gift please place it in the offering plate in a sealed envelope marked 'Eric Choate.' We are happy to collect these gifts and pass them on, but these are given directly to Eric, so they are not tax deductible. Any checks should be made payable to Eric Choate.
