Matthew Woodward has accepted a call to become the Dean of Trinity Cathedral in Sacramento.
Dear Transfig Family,

I am writing to you to let you know that after a period of discernment, and a lot of prayer, I have accepted a call to become the Dean of Trinity Cathedral in Sacramento.

This call to Trinity is also a call away from Transfiguration, and it invites a call for you as a community also - a call to what is next. I have loved serving at Transfiguration, and would happily continue to do so, but this call became real and I felt I had to answer it.

Not only do I love Transfig, but I love and believe in the projects we are engaged in right now. I know they are unfinished, but I am confident in the teams working on them, and in the strength of the ideas behind them. I believe they will create a firm foundation for the next phase of parish life at Transfiguration.

My last Sunday at Transfiguration will be the 9th of August, which we are going to celebrate as Transfiguration Sunday this year.

Between now and then, I invite conversation in two ways. First, each Wednesday between now and August 9th, from 5-6pm I am going to be on my Zoom account. Let's call it a Zoom happy hour. It is a time for us to gather and talk about memories and for you to ask me whatever you might like in a group context. Second, if you want to talk to me individually, please email or text me, and we can arrange a time to talk on the telephone or via Zoom.

I have recorded a video that I invite you to watch. I talk about this call and how it came about and about our current moment at Transfig. Watch it, and let’s talk in the month ahead.

Love,
Matthew+

Dear Matthew,
I know I'm hardly ever at church but whenever I do go and hear you preach I feel so glad to have attended. Your sermons are full of insight and feel pertinent to my life.
I admit to crying when I read the news of you moving on.
Of course in the next breathe I have to congratulate you on the marvelous new position that you will be stepping into in Sacramento. I do wish you all the best on this next phase and adventure.
With love,
Mel

For publication to the Group:

It was a day to remember when, by a stroke of Grace, we latched onto our Current Priest. From my vantage point I came to believe the Search Committee was grasped by the hand of God. How did this talent come to be enticed into the most un-churched geographic area in the U.S., and to a small group at that? As it is said, "It came to pass" that this talent proved itself repeatedly. The retreats, intellect, energy at all times, empathy. art..and challenges to all.
My keen witnessing includes a good Eastern college, one tour in a warzone with 565,000 other her managed souls in a difficult situation, years in the District Attorney's office and multiple stints with law firm folks with extremely high and irritating IQs. Our Current Priest is really unequaled as a mindful master tender and guide of community. We have been lucky.
Of course in seeing the relative size of ponds, in one's own selfish way, one saw it was inevitable that Grace would find a place with a little more water, more breadth, a larger challenge.
In his wake we will be thankful for his membership and wish him Godspeed.
Someone should have advised him about the climate in Sacramento.

Ah yes--that scorching summer heat most often tempered in the evenings by the refreshing Delta Breeze, sent up the river from your neck of the woods. Not to mention that we put air conditioning in our buildings in these parts! ;-)
