Outreach at Transfiguration!

Our mission
To build community by providing avenues and information for parish members to work with those in need in our parish and local community.

Our vision
Every parish member volunteers to work on at least one program during the year.

Our programs
Home & Hope (H&H) - Together we house, feed and care for the needs of homeless families in our Parish Hall. Home & Hope (H&H) of San Mateo provides emergency (60 day) shelter and three meals every day to homeless families with children. The IHN program focuses on intensive personalized case management, tremendous community support, and innovative solutions for securing employment and permanent housing that lead to faster, more effective and lasting outcomes in the lives of families. See the IHN page for more information on this year's hosting dates.

Monthly Collection: Each quarter the St. Margaret’s Guild organizes a collection for a local organization in need, like Samaritan House, the Humane Society and St. Luke’s Layette Program.

Parish Care Committee - Transfiguration cares for its members who need rides to church, meals at home, visits, cards, prayers, and the inspiration of fellowship. Special events, such as Easter plants, Thanksgiving baskets and the Canterbeary Bears, have also helped the larger community to participate in this important ministry, which is a tangible way to express God's love to each other. We are excited by the recent start of the “Prayers and Squares” and “Cookies and Calls” ministries. It is our hope that no one that can use our help goes unnoticed. Please let us know if you know of anyone that can use our help.

Habitat for Humanity -- Once or twice a year we participate in a building project for Habitat, and take up a second collection to support their work. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFH seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need. HFH has built more than 225,000 houses worldwide, and provided providing more than 1 million people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter. Check back later to find out when the next event will be.

Episcopal Charities Walk-a-thon - Walk with the Bishop and your fellow parishioners in this Episcopal Charities fundraiser in San Francisco. Besides some great exercise, you get to visit several of Episcopal Charities programs. Raising $30,000 for the programs and services of Episcopal Charities, the annual Walk-a-thon also introduces walkers to services provided by the partner agencies in our Diocese. Both the 12-mile and the 7.5-mile route provide stops at agencies and parishes along the way to refresh the walker and give education about their programs. Please join us in October 2009.

Brown Bag/Second Harvest - This group meets for an hour every Tuesday morning at the First Presbyterian Church on 25th Avenue to sort and distribute fresh, frozen, and canned food. About 80 low-income seniors receive a bag of groceries each week. This ministry relies in part upon food and paper or plastic bags donated by Transfiguration parishioners. Send an email to Gene Ciranni if you’d like to participate. ruthgene@astreet.com
